Mostly good, but the bad is…bad

Pros

-Love what I do. -Love my co-workers and direct supervisors. -Patrons here are generally pleasant. -I wish I made more but the salary is competitive in the field and the benefits are excellent. -Now that floating is finally gone, I can do real collection management work which is fun. -Flexibility with programming: if I have an idea, I can generally run with it to see how it goes.

Cons

-Buying furniture that isn’t falling apart seems to be impossible. -My building needs a renovation but it could be years until that happens. -We keep losing positions. -All of the above makes me feel worse when I see how many promotions happen centrally. “Magically,” (read: probably from branch positions we’ve lost) there is money to promote people or make brand new support positions that aren’t meaningful to public service. But god forbid we replace a broken chair in a branch or hire another staff. -Most senior leaders and people in “support” departments are really out of touch with what actually happens in public libraries. Why aren’t these people experienced librarians?

Pros

-M-F 7-3 or 8-4 (this is the sorting facility so no weekends) -Union job, so good benefits and worker protections -Holidays off -You get both vacation and sick days -People are willing to teach you new things here -Common to move into mailroom and MylibraryNYC positions -Supplied PPE during covid

Cons

-I believe truck drivers get a bonus check for heavy lifting, seems like something that is needed here -Takes long to replace equipment, the sorter has shut down multiple times -Speaking of equipment this place barely had hand trucks when I first arrived and this is a logistics department -If staff leaves it takes long to replace them -This department and the drivers had to work full-time during covid by August, everyone else was remote or on an A/B schedule (3 days one week and 2 days the next week). Some people continued getting payed on days they didn't work. This department was treated so essential during covid but nothing about the compensation reflected that. We are essential to bring in full-time during covid but when we had an employee leave it wasn't essential to replace him. -Even if they provided PPE during covid, this job is still a hazard. It is an assembly style job , social distancing is not always possible. -Pallets sent from dock aren't wrapped with anything, can be wobbly and on a few occasions have sent stacks falling on the floor
