Pros

The library itself is a great resource to the public that does have a lot of people who deeply care about what they do.

Cons

I don't even know where to begin. Working here as a woman felt like I was transported into the middle of a scene from "9 to 5". While rumors, gossip, and internal bs is natural for an office / warehouse environment , I don't think it should be normal for HR to be an absolute joke. Multiple instances occurred where HR was involved. Their department is performative and there's a complete conflict of interest when it comes to actually investigating cases. The entire process is retroactive. By reporting something to HR, you're actively giving them something else to sweep under the rug. If something happens, the only change is that people move desks and we get a new online training class that nobody really reads through. HR pushes only enough inertia for leadership to make the best decision for themselves, "what best benefits me by causing the least amount of work? what option is going to be least difficult? is what their decisions come across as. My job is to open boxes and to sort books on trucks. Simple, you'd think. But there are people who have caused issues for literal decades, and only until someone new comes along -- thinks they're doing the right thing by listening to leadership when they say "come to me if you have any issues!" -- that new person becomes the catalyst and suddenly has to bear the problems that have been brewing for years on end. This place promotes ignorance. Do your job, do some small talk, go home. Ignore the obvious hate speeches and loud disruptive arguments between "buddies" that bother you, ignore the looks you get when you walk past groups of men looking at you like candy, ignore the bad stuff because it's easier -- change isn't an option here. I am leaving as soon as my one year probation is over, that probation is the only reason why young women professionals stay as long as we have to. I am disappointed that people who claim to uphold a mission that promotes the NYPL mission. This is not a good place to work for a young woman unless you are willing to put up with a hostile and ignorant work environment.
