Mostly good, but the bad is…bad

Pros

-Love what I do. -Love my co-workers and direct supervisors. -Patrons here are generally pleasant. -I wish I made more but the salary is competitive in the field and the benefits are excellent. -Now that floating is finally gone, I can do real collection management work which is fun. -Flexibility with programming: if I have an idea, I can generally run with it to see how it goes.

Cons

-Buying furniture that isn’t falling apart seems to be impossible. -My building needs a renovation but it could be years until that happens. -We keep losing positions. -All of the above makes me feel worse when I see how many promotions happen centrally. “Magically,” (read: probably from branch positions we’ve lost) there is money to promote people or make brand new support positions that aren’t meaningful to public service. But god forbid we replace a broken chair in a branch or hire another staff. -Most senior leaders and people in “support” departments are really out of touch with what actually happens in public libraries. Why aren’t these people experienced librarians?

Pros

- Work is meaningful and interesting. - Colleagues are respectful of your time and do not expect you to work outside of hours. - You have the option to work in the office or work from home. - People are very helpful, open-minded, and transparent about the work. - HR provided a smooth and straight-forward onboarding process.

Cons

Some tech debt, though it is not unique to NYPL. Salary is not the best for the role, but this is expected for a non-profit.

Pros

Meaningful work that serves the New York community and beyond Excellent work life balance Great HR support and benefits I love the work at the library since day one. I had a great onboarding experience here. From filing all required forms to getting to know the team and the projects it was smooth sailing. Everyone at the library works here because they care and it really translates into the working environment and the team culture.

Cons

Things are advancing slow because of the mindful approach. Since this is a non profit your salary won't be as high here as other places.
