Pros

One-of-a-kind place to work, with some very smart and dedicated people doing what they believe in: reporting news fairly and accurately to hold everyone accountable. The standards are high and there is a culture of journalistic honesty, where reporters and editors volunteer corrections, where facts are triple-checked. If you're a fan of the paper, it's very satisfying to work there.

Cons

There wasn't a lot of upward or sideways mobility. And, the Times leads a shrinking industry with questionable future: journalism costs money.

Pros

It's the NYT. It looks great on a resume, and the compensation and benefits were fantastic (at least for me at that point in my life). I learned a fair amount while I was there, and it's great to be a part of a historic company and work with smart people. I really liked my co-workers.

Cons

There wasn't a lot of opportunity for upward mobility. The leadership is aloof and rigid, in many ways. It felt like creativity was reserved for the superstars, and the rest of us had to go by the book. That's boring and not a good talent-retention strategy.

Pros

The quality of the journalism and the mission to report the news without fear or favor. The ability and desire to invest in the business (digital products, video, international, conferences, branded products, etc.). A great brand. A solid balance sheet with cash in excess of debt.

Cons

Challenging industry, characterized by declining print advertising and print circulation revenues. Expect to be responsible for your own career development.
