Pros

Colleagues are good journalists, prize accuracy, clarity and brevity. We work together effectively more than management knows or cares.

Cons

Newsroom is being divided. Secret RSVP-only meetings and parties with publishers for just certain groups. Those left out are looking for jobs elsewhere.

Pros

Still doing strong and ambitious print journalism as other tabloids dumb down content and presentation. Large office space in LI with parking. Intelligent and hard-working reporters and editors. Small 401K Match, decent, competitive salary. Average vacation time

Cons

Essentially, when you work for Newsday, expect to give up your social life, sanity, freedom and more. Staffers are micromanaged to complete insanity, journalism practices are way behind the times — and it shows. Good luck making a decision on your own, the smallest of things can spark hours of pointless meetings as top editors agonize over a decision they will make for you. Expect to work hours beyond what you think is normal — and if you ever complain about work-life balance, they will just yes to death and do nothing about it. They will probably end up just giving you more work to do. Morale is terrible, and there's resentment towards upper management. You will be treated like a robot and bled to death until you can't take it anymore. The littlest mistake you make will always become a giant ordeal, creating a scared and neurotic environment. It's a hyper-corporate environment to the max. The fact that you work for Cablevision is constantly hanging over you. (Also the health insurance is terrible) Yes, the product is good, but you must ask yourself if the agony of working there is worth it. It is not.

Pros

A reliable paycheck, a lot of the staff (non-management) is really nice and easy to work with, free bagels each week (Fri-Sun), that's about it...

Cons

Micro-managing is rampant. Too many people focus way too much on the small stuff and let good ideas for progress and innovation go to waste. They are generally understaffed and overworked, and favoritism is HUGE here, especially on the .com side, so if you're not "in" with the higher ups, forget ever getting promoted. Managers expect you to eat/sleep/breathe Newsday and then penalize you for trying to have a life outside of work. The health benefits are terrible and there is no such thing as overtime pay on the web side (good luck ever being able to take the "comp time" that they'll promise you).
