Pros

Smart, motivated colleagues you learn from. They provide a solid benefits package. Some managers really care about your progress and work.

Cons

Salaries are not competitive. If you live in the New York City boroughs, the commute is a bear. There's a divide between the print and digital side, though that has improved. On the digital team, holidays are required, and are not treated as holiday pay (although print is paid that way.)

Pros

Your mediocre paycheck will clear. Decent catering around the holidays. If the managers like you then you might be able to move laterally with no title or promotion. The lobby is lovely. There are only fruit flies in the summer. Maintenance will come and clean up dead mice in a few hours.

Cons

If you love to be micromanaged this is your place! If you never expect to be promoted, send in your resume. If you want to watch a half a million in salaries spend 3 hours whining over a layout, break out the popcorn. Your union dues will be wasted on people who couldn't negotiate their way out of a box. It's always fun to watch people with no skills climb the ranks, right? Your health insurance will cost upwards of a mortgage payment and your raises will never be enough to cover those costs.

Pros

Bagels every Friday. Free cable and internet, because part of Cablevision. There's a cafeteria on site with decent prices - and they'll put you up if the weather's bad.

Cons

Extremely stressful environment. Micromanaged to the hilt. Too many managers get involved in decisions and make mountains out of molehills. Expect to be reprimanded for the littlest of infractions, including tone of voice and body language. You'll be chained to your desk. Take forever to hire and let months go by without adequate coverage, leading to more stress for remaining employees, who are not given the resources to succeed but instead impossible metrics and deadlines. Training is not adequate and expectations are not clear, and they do not give time and space for employees to learn. Extremely corporate environment; not flexible in the least and very rigid when it comes to even the smallest things.
