Before Newsweek, I thought all newsrooms were the same. They are filled with people who were disorganised, aggressive and disgruntled. Newsweek is something else. You can expect people to call in sick often because they're so stressed they can't face the day, or they actually are sick from being overloaded. You can expect meetings where journalists need to be told they need to speak to people for articles, not just rip stuff off the internet. You can expect to work late hours but not because of anything breaking. Instead, it will be because people are disorganised, haven't answered you until it's too late and then expect you to stay to make up for that. Believe me, all your complaints about traditional newsrooms will feel quaint should you take whatever job is on offer.

If you are looking for a job here, seriously do not take it. It's not worth it, believe me. Newsweek uses AI to write most of its articles, and uses its very talented reporters as essentially AI watchers at this point. Reporters are stuck behind their computers for 9 hours a day just to make sure that an AI copy is put up under their name, and if they push back against it are told they're not embracing the "future of journalism." Management is constantly lying, panicking, and shifting blame. Every terrible choice that they've made over the past few years is somehow the fault of their reporters. They have no vision for the future, and no voice for the outlet. Newsweek relies on its older reputation to get clicks, but there is very little to no original journalism on the site and editors rely almost entirely on ripping off the hard work of other smaller outlets to get news up. I took a job there because it seemed like a good idea at the time, and I massively regret it. If you have any other options at all, do not work at Newsweek. It will kill any love for journalism you may have.
