This was not a pleasant experience at all. There was next to no communication and they expect your performance to be off the charts from the day you start. They don't even give you a chance to adjust. Likewise, they have a culture issue from the top – but the editor for my team was brutal and would often ghost when I had questions about a project. I can't tell you how much time I wasted on stories because of either a lack of guidance from the editor, or they would have one small issue. And because of that, it wouldn't get published and I couldn't meet my daily requirements. Not only was the lack of communication unacceptable, but there was no leadership there and nobody cared if you figured it out or not. It's either figure it out yourself or you'll be gone. I wish they were transparent about expectations and what to expect in the role before I accepted the role. Sounds like they've laid off a number of employees in the last several months. If you have a stable job, I would really think twice about leaving for this company. Newsweek won't hesitate to replace you. I only recommend giving this company a shot if you need a new role.

My team, consisting of four writers and one editor, was brought on last year. Unfortunately, one writer was terminated almost immediately, setting an uncomfortable tone from the outset. Senior management seemed intent on undermining our team’s productivity, leading to an environment with ZERO culture, ZERO support, and nearly ZERO communication beyond our immediate editor. After six months, I was laid off, along with our editor, while two writers were retained. Despite being told it was due to "performance issues," I was on track for my best month in terms of internal KPI's. The layoff was abrupt and without warning—no Performance Improvement Plan, no discussions with senior editors—just a blindsiding termination on a Monday morning. Despite the competitive pay, the overall experience was marred by poor management, lack of support, and a toxic work environment. Newsweek's treatment of employees leaves much to be desired.
