Pros
- Work on impactful projects
- Work with and learn from talented engineers
- Growth opportunities
Nexient is probably the only 100% U.S. based outsourcing company. Historically, that tends to result in higher quality work due to many factors. Companies have noticed this, which is partly why Nexient has grown as much as it has recently.
Many of the projects at Nexient are from Fortune 500 companies that are household names. Before leaving, I was working on a project for a company that impacts billions of lives around the world. As a Developer at Nexient, it's very likely that you would end up working on a project for a well-known company.
Additionally, the teams are structured with a mix of talent so that you've got some senior people and some junior people. Everybody who wants to learn and grow will find many opportunities to do so. It is in everybody's best interest for the team to do well, so everyone is encouraged to help each other.
It's very inspiring to be in an environment where you notice people always getting better around you.
Finally, and I think this is especially great for minorities, there are a lot of growth opportunities for those who are interested. By the end of my employment at Nexient, I had the opportunity to lead a team, to speak publicly on a large platform, to mentor and be mentored.
As a bonus, there are some genuinely great people working there too. I definitely have some friends that I will hold on to for life.
Cons
Most of the companies that Nexient does work for are not inherently tech companies. It's very easy for someone without much technical understanding to ask too much of the developers.
I don't think this is a company-wide con since it's very specific to the client my project was for, but it can sometimes get difficult establishing a great work/life balance.
Most people want to do their work, contribute to the team, and feel fulfilled knowing they've done what's needed of them. There are also some people who want the opportunity to over-achieve. All of this can be tough if the only way to be on top of your work is to work nights and weekends.
I've seen Nexient start to address this before I left and they may be further along now. But they definitely do have an opportunity here to help their employees.
