Mission-First w/The Right Balance of Autonomy/High Expectations

Pros

-Amazing colleagues (intelligence, mission-focused, humor, and love) -Most leadership has a students-first/teachers-second/selves-last mentality -Teachers and leaders given autonomy to innovate (a growing rarity in the large-charter space) -Student discipline and happiness is best-in-class -Constantly evolving. Far from perfect but has the humility to admit it.

Cons

-Though the autonomy is real and appreciated, the floor could be raised with more centralized (not just campus or Relay GSE) focus on teacher training -Chicago is a tough place to be right now; all the more reason Noble is needed but makes being a teacher harder when there's so much anger and unknowns (budget, education) in the public arena -More all-network time. We only see other campuses or hear 'what's going on at the network' a couple of times a year.

Pros

I started and continue to work at Noble because I wanted to be surrounded by educators who care as much and put in as much effort every day as I do. At my particular campus, this is true of nearly everyone I work with and it is a very unique experience to respect and be respected by so many coworkers. Our discipline code is strict, and while it is easy to find small things that you disagree with, overall it truly allows for a safe environment where student learning is maximized. I feel I am given the resources I need to do my best work every day. Benefits are good.

Cons

Working at Noble can easily become your life. This is my fifth year and I am only starting to not feel guilty if I don't do work at home every evening, or if I refuse to do work on Saturdays. With high expectations for students come high expectations for staff - Noble also tends to hire people with high expectations for themselves and a history of achievement. At my campus there is no one telling you that you have to work overtime - everyone just does it in order to stay afloat and meet their own expectations. Salary is lower than for comparable positions in CPS.

Pros

Noble has allowed me to build many different skill sets. Firstly, there is a large focus on collaboration, and I have been pushed to observe, reflect and engage with peers across the science department (where I work) as well as in other departments. The commitment to collaboration and a growth mindset has kept me at Noble for a longer time than I anticipated going in. Secondly, there are a lot of great ways to develop leadership skills in the Network, from serving as a leader on a department team to working on the network's Hedgehog team. Finally, the people that I work with are the HARDEST working individuals that I know. The kids are fantastic and have grown up in the network BELIEVING they must work hard to get to a great college- makes teaching a wonderful activity to be involved in. This is an exhausting but satisfying job, and I end each dat knowing that I contributed positively - only a con if you are in it for a reason other than helping the kids!

Cons

I do believe that there are great resources, but classes are sometimes larger than I would desire and lab space can be hard to come by.
