It’s not worth it

Pros

There really is no pros.

Cons

Extremely toxic environment. It’s like working with the mean girls from high school. Employees with seniority bully new hires. A lot of people have ridiculously high egos and think they’re better than others. A big portion of the team gossips about each other 24/7. If you want to work in store #220/Chicago just know people will try to steal your customers, throw you under the bus, talk negatively about you, and do anything to mess with you. Management does not care and does the bare minimum if you bring up any concerns. Security was very bad. Almost every week groups of people will come in and start stealing popular cosmetics. There is a lot of fraud and scams going on in the store. There has been multiple times where I did not feel safe in the work place.

Almost Killed Me

Pros

I was given the chance to work on some interesting projects.

Cons

Twice during my six years at Nordstrom I was assigned to a team managed by a horrible human being. Both of these managers abused their direct reports. The procedure at the company was always to find someone to blame rather than trying to fix anything. The "urgent" was always prioritized over the "important." Any time there was an issue, the company forced the responsible manager to leave the company and buried the problem, rather than try to fix the issue. Everyone was terrified all the time because they knew if there was no one to blame they would be singled out and terminated for some fabricated reason. During the pandemic, any one with experience was let go and Nordstrom used entry level employees to fill the gaps. They did this while expecting the same level of productivity from existing employees. Personally, I became seriously ill during the pandemic. During my illness the company demoted me and eventually forced me to resign. I raised these issues with HR. HR promised there would be no retaliation but of course there was. I almost died trying to maintain my position at Nordstrom and after six years of service I was tossed aside like garbage.

It's a Mixed Bag

Pros

- Some of the most amazing employees and colleagues I have had have been at Nordstrom. - Nordstrom family is still hands on with the business and are servant-leaders. - Company has employee groups to support different groups (BIPOC, Queer, etc), all are welcome at these groups and they put on great events talking about content relevant to the communities.

Cons

- Rampant favoritism in some departments - Lot of middle management with little ability to provide anonymous feedback or seek help when you have a bad manager - Toxic managers / employees are tolerated and often accommodated despite the inverted pyramid & customer first culture (easy for toxicity to flourish because of this, employees who live the Nordstrom values will put in the work while the loud/toxic employees often get moved around or sometimes rewarded for bullying/slacking.) - Once you reach a certain point at Nordstrom it is very hard to continue growth unless you have an in. - Employee groups are employee lead (unpaid at the time I was there) and employees are supposed to clock-out when participating. - Coaching and growth is often left to the employee, rather than the manager. This includes managers who are often reviewed without input from the teams they support.
