Politics, politics, politics

Pros

Good for entry level personnel entering the workforce, good hours (8-4/9-5 etc)

Cons

System has gotten too big for its own good. A lot of hard working employees sit idle in their positions for years on end. HR is a disaster. Do not expect responses on even 5% of job applications if looking to move towards a better opportunity. Employees are expected to be quiet lap dogs. Anyone expressing a desire for growth is labelled a "problem" and their reputation and character are attacked. Politics rule all. A select few are moved through the system career ladder at lightning speed due to their connections while several great workers rot in roles they are overqualified for. Minority candidates always get first crack at desireable jobs.

Great ideas, but no follow through

Pros

NSLIJ is widely recognized, so it is great to be able to drop a name that people will know. The system is rapidly expanding across a wide geographic region, and it's been great to be able to network between hospitals to help my department. The system offers great programs and services for its employees (so long as you're not on the outer reaches of "the net" at locations like Huntington, Southside, or Staten Island).

Cons

Poor management and leadership. Perks for lousy employees, bigger work load for excellent employees. No room for advancement unless you're a doctor, nurse, PA, hospitalist, etc. No recognition of a job well done, only focus on errors and "room for improvement". They required that all employees come up with "personal goals" for 2014, but no follow through by management to actually help the employee achieve them. Favoritism by management gets choice employees better hours, lighter work load, special projects, and recognition.

NSLIJ Motto: Quantity over Quality - Don't Drink the Kool Aid

Pros

You'll meet some great people. Some doctors and medical professionals that are in the field for the right reason. Good amount of time off.

Cons

Don't expect any personal growth unless you have a hook. Go into the global email system and you'll be floored by the nepotism here. Everyone has the same 10-20 last names. Office politics can be debilitating. You'll spend more time figuring out how to work with people rather than actually doing work, you know, saving lives? The system's motto is quantity over quality, as they buy up hospital after hospital, never stopping to make them better. They have 17 hospitals yet the only ones anyone ever wants to go to is NSUH and LIJ. Execs seem so detached from reality as there's been a few rounds of layoffs in the past few years but apparently supplemental helicopters are in the budget? Yeah, happy holidays!
