Pros

Pension and free lunch are great. The company has never laid off an employee for so long so the feeling of stability is there - which is a plus in the current shaky economy. It's business is doing great. People in charge of running the business side must be smart and competent.

Cons

This pertains to the I.S. division only. Promotion is not consistent among different groups at Northwestern Mutual especially in I.S. So its easy to get discouraged. Performance ratings are inconsistent among managers and among IS specialties yet everyone is using the same grade system to determine pay. There's a lot more value to soft skills at NM than in technical skills as shown by the people who have advanced in the company. So if you're a technical person this may not be the place to work for. This is a place where a lot of talking needs to occur before something can happen.

Pros

Everyone is very nice and helpful. It is a very rewarding job getting to help people map out their futures. As an intern, we go through a great training program to help us get our feet wet and understand a lot about the company. It was great working there during the summer because you get to meet other interns and work as teams. I love helping people understand what they can do with their money and plan for retirement. I have learned so much in the past few months and it has been great real world experience and I am so happy I got chosen as an intern. I also enjoy the freedom of being able to come and go as we please and that we are our own boss.

Cons

One of the biggest downsides for working at northwestern mutual financial network is that the compensation is straight commission. It is hard coming from a job where you know exactly what you are making to a job where it is up in the air. It all depends on the work you put into it. Which is great for those entreprenuerial types, but for others, it is hard. You also have to be a little confrontational with people and face a lot of awkward situations which most are not used to. Such as calling family friends and asking for referrals. In my opinion, it's a lot of challenging work, mentally, but anyone can stay strong and move past that!

Pros

Everyting is great at this company...income potential is unlimited. The work hours are pretty flexible and you spend the majority of your day meeting clients and assessing their needs for the future. I couldn't ask for a better job and what a better job than to help people who are in need. It makes me smile to not only sell someone a product that they really need but to sell it knowing that they took part in the process by exchanging information on what they wanted. It's not a product that you really have to sell to hard because it's a basic need.

Cons

There are none...this job is definitely for those willing to put hard work into it.
