Pros

Working at a university gives you plenty of oppertunities. For instance, there are always interesting lectures or programs going on that your can attend, not to mention the 75% to 85% tuition remission that allows you to take classes. Additionally, you can be a member of there gym for about 25 dollars a month.

Cons

Academic culture is slow and ineffecient. There is not much room for advancement and they tend to value advance degress more then actually compentcy. Additionally, for some departments, you can be seperated from the campus and not experience the full extent of working at a university.

Pros

The longer you work here, the harder it is to get fired. The tuition reimbursement is really good for your children. This is most beneficial if you are faculty, since you are probably done with pursuing higher education. The work life balance is fair. If you have a decent supervisor, they will usually give you the time off that is needed. If you are a salaried employee, you get tons of sick days. I believe it's over 100 a year. These days will of course correspond to your short and long term disability. You must pay a monthly fee for these benefits, but it is quite small.

Cons

The salaries for a majority of the jobs are really bad. Longevity in the company is not appreciated at all. Employess are not given that much of a tuition discount at this university. Employees are not given any discounts at other schools. This is a real bummer because this university does not have a wide range of degrees to get. The career opportunities are quite limited. If you start off as a data person, you will most likely be forced to continue in this line of work because each time you try to transfer to a different job, they want experience.

Pros

unlimited resources - academic contacts, worldclass libraries, great discount on courses (75% off graduate courses, 85% for undergraduate), evanston is also a beautiful campus, right on the lake. it all depends who you work for and who you work with, as the northwestern community is really divided - there's a lot of really exciting work going on that is often really fragmented - competition between departments and offices is common, so coordination is often a problem. there are some ego issues. if you're dealing with students, most of them are really bright and interesting, but can often be demanding and bratty as well.

Cons

lack of coordination between departments and offices - a lot of interesting research and programs going on, but often a sense of competitiveness, sometimes smarmy people to work with.
