Pros

The reputation of Northwestern University is strong and has often attracted the best talent. 403b match for benefits of 10% for 5% of your contribution is fairly high. Tuition discounts and additional access to education opportunities. Beautiful campus as well as many buildings on campus.

Cons

Recent financial crisis has hampered the progress of the university as a whole, whether that would be in regards to financial growth, employee retention or quality of education. Projections are for this crisis to continue at least until 2021. Due to this crisis, management mainly focuses on short-term cost savings and in many cases disregards the long-term overall goals. An example of this is the rarely high turnover in our department with no interest on the management's end to retain high quality talent. Non-competitive pay.

Temporary Center Review

Pros

No pros, after being a temporary employee.

Cons

The temp center was just all around confused and Northwestern's general HR seemed very confused at times as well. Misinformation was being sent out on how to set up NUIT logins and the people in charge didn't even realize it, I, the temp employee, had to tell them. The temp center was short two pages of information which caused much confusion for IT and the department on the first day of work, it made me look like a complete moron. Management also failed to respond to emails and had very confusing out of office replies, wrong dates and times for returns. The general HR area also had a difficult time answering very simple questions about applying for permanent employment while being a temp, three different responses to the same question via the telephone.

Pros

Staff benefits are phenomenal: matching contributions to your 403b, health/dental/ vision insurance, lots of time off, AND tuition discounts for yourself and your family members. It's also great to work at a mission-driven place with smart people!

Cons

Most positions have no clear path forward and, even if they do, getting promoted internally (meaning, within your particular department) is rare and difficult. The pay is also far below the industry standard while the expectations for how much you're supposed to accomplish and your credentials for an open position are incredibly high.
