Excellent Place to Work

Pros

Senior leadership makes decisions that are tough but are in the best long-term interest of the company. High potential for advancement, lots of opportunity to move within the company. Established HR department that truly implements the company's mission, vision and values. Best in class corporate training and developmental programs. Salaries seem to be on par or better than the industry average.

Cons

An established HR department can be a double edged sword. In some cases, Novant has leaders in place that lack true leadership ability. Leadership positions seem to be filled based on tenure, not proven success and potential for growth. There should be more flexibility in place to re-assign ineffective leaders, regardless of tenure with the company. Also, Novant's tuition reimbursement policy speaks volumes about how little they value higher education. The current policy is to reimburse only $1500 per year, enough to cover a few books but nothing else.

Pros

There used to be several but no more

Cons

Used to be a great place to work until "transformation teams" took over and stripped employees of most of the benefits and perks. Uses excuse of impending Obamacare to account for overcharging patients for services and underpaying employees. Senior management collects millions of dollars in bonuses and perks while employees are being laid off. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent on building brand new state of the art facilities that are only a few miles from the main hospital. Employees are treated like they are owned. No work/life balance and employees are expected to come in whenever called at a moment's notice.

Pros

Pay was decent. No overtime or shift work. I am trying to think of more, but am having a difficult time coming up with the Pros of working there. Oh, somewhat flexible schedule.

Cons

Novant was strictly in a growth and acquisition mode the last 6 to 7 years. As a result, they grew with little regard towards maturing processes. Because they spent so much money acquiring other organizations, they are now forced to make reductions in their work force. I was forced to constantly justify my existence. Because some Senior Mgmt/Directors have been there for 20 years, the culture is opposed to change. In addition, these same members of mgmt don't have much experience outside of the organization. There is little to no opportunities for promotions. Career development is non-existent. Performance evaluations are merely a paper-work exercise, as performance is not tied to pay. If you are looking for a place to work where you can just blend in and meet minimal expectations, then Novant might be the place for you. If you are looking for a place that will help to advance your career, you are best to stay away from this organization. Benefits are absolutely horrible. Tuition reimbursement is a joke.
