Pros

A good learning experience in the Auto industry. You handle all kinds of different parts and components of vehicles it is hard NOT to learn a thing or two. Then the odd battery install here and headlight replacement there and you start to become much more comfortable under the hood of a car or truck. They do offer PLENTY of workers benefits as well for yourself and family.

Cons

Customers expect either a slave or a genius behind that counter. Some people were so clueless that you were the Messiah if you fixed a small problem like telling them that they actually NEED TO REPLACE AN AIR FILTER. Some other customers would know exactly what they want in their own way and if you weren't on their wavelength, good luck. This is where really good people skills/customer service skills come into play but that will only get you so far. Stubborn mechanics with OLD cars are the worst. Some of the things they need haven't been standard on cars since the smog era and certain bits and pieces are impossible to find unless you go to a junkyard. You will tell them this (what they didn't wanna hear cus they need it done TODAY) and then it is your fault they are throwing thousands at a car that is maybe older than they are.

Pros

Benefits are pretty good for a company in the midwest. Decent medical, okay Dental, decent vacation time.

Cons

Pay was really low compared to industry standards. This was often explained with the comment "We are an Auto Parts Store" not an IT shop. O'Reilly's IT department was at the time over 800 people. There is some nepotism at the middle management level. Hard to break into management even with a stellar resume. No budget for retainment.
