Pros

Great people work there and want to make a difference. Lot of folks have been here for a long time, so it has the fabric to be a great place but....

Cons

The current CIO is always on the warpath. He yells at people when he doesn’t understand the technology or simply isn’t engaged, and doesn’t do it discreetly. People are fearful to tell him the truth so his directs are constantly trying make sure nothing moves forward so to stay out of his wrath. It just creates an environment that nobody wants to suggest anything to move OCLC into the present with technology.

Pros

Great people committed to a solid mission. Genuine commitment to the library community. Outstanding benefits. HR staff and leadership in most areas is forward thinking and genuinely wants to improve the organization.

Cons

IT leadership rules with fear and intimidation. Definitely not a good work environment. Too many vanity projects and very little delivery of value to the customers. Staff are afraid to bring bad news, so hide or sugar coat to avoid being the target of ridicule. Can't find find the IT leaders half the time. The IT leadership despise Europeans and downsized almost all of the European IT staff.

Low pay, clueless direction

Pros

- Immediate manager is great. - I've gotten the opportunity to learn skills. - Relaxed environment. - Good non-pay benefits.

Cons

- Pay is abysmal. Same job would pay double elsewhere. I've literally never seen my job title pay less anywhere else. Meanwhile the CEO rakes in a multimillion-dollar salary (non-profit company by the way). This was true pre-pandemic, but is way more obvious now. - The business decisions make no sense. - People resist any and all change, because failure is fine. Our customers can't afford to leave us, so we won't be punished by delivering garbage. - Don't fall for the long tenure stat they have. People stay a long time, it's true, but there are only so many careers for librarians that don't want to work in a library. People stay because there's nowhere else to go.
