Pros

-The people are the heart and soul of the company and most are talented, hard-working, and enjoyable to work with. I made many friendships at Ocean Spray that I expect will last a lifetime. -Working for a farmer-owned cooperative gives a sense of purpose not found at other corporate companies, however, since the new leadership team took over the interaction and connection with grower-owners has decreased significantly. -Work life balance in most departments is good. Depending on the manager, they allow for flexible hours and remote working arrangements. There are half day Fridays in the summer and over the holidays. -Benefits package (health insurance, 401k match) are competitive.

Cons

Working at Ocean Spray taught me what to watch out for with future employers. During my time there, the company underwent a complete leadership turnover, multiple re-orgs, and several rounds of layoffs. While the changes initially seemed positive and geared at turning around a declining business, the new leadership has retained many of the issues from the ‘old Ocean Spray’ and changed the culture to a cut-throat, fear driven environment. Direction from leadership regarding strategy is not consistent or effective, which leaves lower level employees unable to make the decisions necessary to do their jobs and drive the business forward, resulting in frantic energy, wasted time, and missed opportunities. Most people are extremely stressed, all the time, which leaves them with a short fuse. I agree with a previous review that describes meetings as shouting matches – this was also a common occurrence for me. Leadership and HR put more of an emphasis on what gets done than how it gets done, meaning that several ineffective (and often toxic) managers go un-checked at the expense of good employees. On top of the challenging culture, compensation is below industry average, and the effects of the struggling business are passed on to employees. Last year no bonuses were paid out, and no salary increases were given (not even a cost of living increase). Many employees deserving of promotions are not receiving the promotion or recognition they deserve. A lot of talented, hard-working employees have already chosen to leave the company, and I expect more will follow.

Thanks for your review. We appreciate your feedback. We agree that our Ocean Spray colleagues are the heart of this cooperative, and we believe our farmer families are what keeps that heart beating. We are proud to be on a mission to connect farms to families for a better life. We know that change can sometimes be scary. Through our transition, we believe our Ocean Spray Family is, has, and always will be the key to our success as a company. We would love the opportunity to speak with you about your professional development through our changes. We appreciate your guidance regarding open communication. It is our goal to make sure communication flows seamlessly both vertically and horizontally within the organization. It is not always perfect, but we try hard at it and we are committed. We are driving clear and open communication company-wide with our Town Halls, Let’s Talk forums, targeted meetings, and digital channels like Blue Jeans and Yammer. We are available to answer questions, lend an ear, or provide guidance on best next steps to work through and embrace change. We encourage you to reach out to us directly so we can discuss your concerns. We look forward to hearing from you.

Stepford New Employees

Pros

Getting less and less as each day passes

Cons

Out of touch leadership team with delusions of thinking that they will be able to turn the company around. Using the stepford employees approach -- bringing in new employees to tout your story will only work for so long. They too will become disillusioned when they realize that there is no sound strategy to turn the business around and that they will most likely lose their job too, it's just a matter of time with no strategic plans in sight.

Board Sanctioned Massacre

Pros

Pros are a thing of the past...

Cons

Cons are all that is left... For those who ask if the board is aware of what is going on, well, you need not ask anymore. The outsourcing of IT and Finance along with the massive cuts here, there and everywhere are what the Board tasked their flashy new hatchet man to accomplish. The cooperative as we knew it does not exist anymore. Plants will be sold and all that will be left is a nice little office on Boston to “market” the brand. The greed of the large growers and top executives are all that matters. It is a shame. The small growers and long time dedicated corporate and manufacturing employees will ultimately pay the price. They showed their allegiance to the cooperative and what did they get in return? Nothing but heartache. But we the worker bees haven’t sold our souls to the devil. RIP Ocean Spray. It was nice to know you.

In July, Ocean Spray announced the final phase of its tech-led transformation, which will modernize our business and make it more flexible, as well as create more meaningful and strategic roles to deliver on our goals and growth strategy. Unfortunately, with that change, some of our colleagues will be transitioning out of our cooperative. We recognize the range of emotions this announcement caused, as demonstrated by these recent posts. We hope you will come speak with us about your feelings rather than post online-- we are here to help. We are confident this is the right business decision, both for our Farmer-Owners and for the health and growth of the business. Our goal has and will remain to treat any impacted colleagues with respect, provide them with assistance and transitional benefits, and also take care of our team as we move forward together. Our business strategy is working, we delivered on our commitments this year, and we are proud of the accomplishments all of our have colleagues worked so hard for. We remain excited and ready for the future.
