Double edged sword

Pros

Good learning experience, lots of hands on projects, give you a good career in the HFT field in long term. And obviously very good paid despite being stressful.

Cons

Extremely stressful. Competitive internally. Lots of Layoff for employees with no career growths, especially those that have been around for longer than 3 years without plan to be a senior developer. Direct feedback culture can be seen as toxic. Hire too much in short term and now the growth does not cover the cost anymore, be careful to join as a new grad.

Very competitive

Pros

Very good expertise in options market making and position taking. They always have more ideas to make money than they have dev resources to throw at them. As a goog developer with a little bit of understanding of the business side there's heaps of opportunities to do well.

Cons

The company has gotten very big in recent years, and has been losing its initial start up feel. The performance evaluation for developers often tends to prioritize shorter term deliveries. Big projects that span multiple review cycles and take a while to show their value tend to get under rewarded. This creates the wrong incentives among developers.

A top tier trading firm

Pros

- Optiver is ambitious and continues growing. There is a competitive spirit, a desire to be the best and long term aspirations. - Optiver realizes that people and talent are key to success. - For motivated, disciplined, ownership-seeking individuals there's tremendous upside and growth potential. Lots of examples of junior and campus hires eventually progressing to senior leadership positions. - Leadership takes transparency seriously. Not everything can and will be shared with everyone. However, compared to most places, a huge premium is put on transparency. - Optiver is a collaborative company. There's minimal intra-office competition. - There's a good quorum of technical and trading leaders that have been with the firm for a number of years.

Cons

- Optiver isn't without flaws, just like any other company. - When you have group of ambitious high-achievers, it's bound to create occasional tension. - There's always a crunch for resources. This can lead to difficulties focusing on the right things and tough decisions. - There are a number of areas, both internal and external, where Optiver should be more aggressive.
