Pros

New CEO has re-energized the company and is attracting strong talent to help improve key areas of the company. Smart, dedictaed employees and much less political and bureacratic than other large internet companies I have worked for. Young workforce creates a fun and enjoyable work setting.

Cons

Like all companies, deciding what to focus on and what opportunities to walk away from is a challenge. Orbitz could use a little more focus.

Increasing momentum at OWW

Pros

Obitz had a difficult start to 2009. The year started with a CEO transition, a down economy, price competitiion from competitors and a leveraged balance sheet. Wall Street analysts were making dire predictions about the company and the stock was trading below $2/share. However, the company led by its energetic new CEO, Barney Harford, has really turned things around and there is great feeling of momentum. Transaction growth has returned in a strong way, profits are up (despite the elimination of the consumer booking fee), new talent is coming in to the company (and some great old talent has returned), and the company just received a $100 MM infusion of cash signalling great support by seemingly intelligent investors. The company has a strong brand and the momentum has returned.

Cons

The company still feels to move at a slower pace than I would like. While things have improved in this regard, there is more work to be done and it seems as if steps are being taken to rectify this. It feels as if there is more beaurocracy than an Internet company should have. And there could be a better sense of teamwork - although this should come as the senior team adjusts to the new additions and begins working together better.

Pros

They seem to be very employee-friendly. I can work at home or take time of virtually any time I need. Technical managers are all very competent. I think compensation is very fair, benefits above average. Location is excellent, in the same building as the train station. The company is mostly a java shop but there are pockets of activity in other languages, and management seems very open to suggestions. There are lots of opportunities to learn and try new things.

Cons

I don't have admin rights to my own workstation, which is a first for me. I think Orbitz is suffering from some poor technical decisions made in the past. There needs to be a bigger focus on teams sharing a common framework for software development. Instead of fixing the standard framework, some teams will simply strike off on their own using different versions of java or creating non-standard build steps to meet their needs.
