Pros

Although a big IT company, still has dot-comish feel to it. Many great developers.

Cons

Senior management really lacks in qualification. However with the new CEO we recently got, this seems to have started changing.

Pros

Orbitz is the top eCommerce company to work for in Chicago. That may sound inflated, but we're not talking about Seattle or San Francisco. There are very few global e-commerce companies in the area, so the competition is admittedly thin. However, the thrill and responsibility of working for a company that gets a million uniques a day is exceptional. The workforce is on the whole young, ambitious, and bright. It is not nearly as nimble as a startup, but that is counterbalanced by having the brand presence and resources to establish partnerships and leverage technologies that you otherwise can't get with a small company. The office location is insanely convenient for both downtown and suburban residents (in the Ogilvie Transportation building). The office itself is a modern open-concept layout that is very nice to work in. And there's a ping pong table, an internet company must-have.

Cons

It's a big company (almost 1000 globally) and thus there is some inevitable red tape and slowness to react with industry trends. The travel industry is an uber-competitive one, and there is pressure from senior leadership on down to analysts to get better margins, increase efficiency, and continually come up with innovative ideas. The economy forced some layoffs, and that is unpleasant and nerve-wracking to go through. There have been re-orgs than one would expect (1/year since I've been here) and that can cause churn and uncertainty.

Pros

Orbitz is such an innovator with so many firsts in the industry. The workforce is very flexible - we have to be - and there are many opportunities to 'make a difference.' For the most part, upper management is very open to ideas and initiatives from both employees and clients. Many features on the sites are the direct result of client feedback. The working environment is very modern and there are many amenities both in the office and the building. Transportation couldn't be easier; the Metra depot right downstairs. Non traditional schedules and telecommuting are accommodated wherever possible. HR practices are enlightened. The benefits offered are average.

Cons

The fast-moving environment makes internal communications difficult. There's some uniformity in the workforce (young/techie/urban) that's sometimes bothersome. There was a lot of unnecessary politicking in the recent election.
