Pros

Great salary and bonuses. You are showered with money. Health insurance in specific is ridicolous.

Cons

There is a high degree of nepotism. The company was founded by a group of friends, who are all now C-Level. Some of them remain fair, but some promote their friends and incompetent middle managers. The HR system itself does not work. You are assigned a PSM (people success manager) who will help you with your career, problems and so on. Which sounds great... except that they do nothing. Literaly nothing. I have had multiple problems with my subordinates. None got solved. Especially in the EMEA region, the PSMs are useless. Which does not stop them from being promoted. Following up on this last point, OutSystems has been participating in a large-scale cover up of their HR failures in the Portuguese press. They are praised for hiring people during the COVID crisis, when in reality they are only making up for the people they are firing in droves. They pay a ridiculous amount of money (one year's pay) to fire anybody they want under any circumstance (they don't tell the public this, though. Curious). They also have a performance tracking system, OutPerform. Which is supposedly a "next-level platform" for managing reviews and progression. This is also a sham. I have been since its inception three years ago. This system has not been used once for a promotion or gathering of feedback. None of the members of its original team remain in the company (it's still promoted to the press as something unique and amazing). This company was good in the beginning, but the culture changed. People that screwed over colleagues were not tolerated, but they started being accepted, and rose through the ranks. Right now, if you are hired by OutSystems, you can expect a "russian rolette career". Being promoted and obtaining bonuses will depend on your friends and not your skills. Unless you go to the HR department. In that case, based on all my experiences, you can literally do nothing and rise to the top.

Pros

- Compensation is reasonable even though for people back in the home country is much lower than the overseas counterparts despite the fact the most of the heavy lifting in terms of product, delivery and backoffice is still in Portugal. This creates some distrust among peers. - There's a stock options plan that for everyone but unfortunately unless you're a manager you can forget anything substantial. - Despite some people undeservedly gaining ground and crawling to the top there's still a lot of bright and friendly people to which is possible to do valuable work with. - The HR group is very supportive and trying very hard to keep the culture that made the company special. - There are opportunities to move in the company.

Cons

This used to be a great company and a great place to work. The kind of place where you would feel joy to wake up and come to work. Now I can only say that it's nothing like it was and the joy it's not the same. It's a growing company with a fast pace but some of it seems artificial. 30% to 50% of the workforce joined in the past year in what it seems to be an attempt to inflate evaluation. Strategy change almost every 6 months with major reorgs every couple of years but the product remains basically the same for the past 2/3 years when mobile was introduced and the web part is getting outdated fast. Amidst this constant change and turmoil a few things are emerging: - Everyone likes to brag on how smart and "special" our people are but the truth is that there are some "not so special" people and those seem to be riding the wave and getting themselves to top positions. Nowadays it seems everyone is a director a VP or Head of something and in some cases without having done much to justify it. - It used to be a clear meritocracy with low politics but now unless you're good at self promoting or you're friends with someone you can pretty much kiss goodbye to any intentions of progressing. - Despite the fact that talent in the technology is scarce the few talent that exists is treated as if it was expendable. There's a career plan that seems to be more for show off and attract external people than anything else and there's not a real focus on developing people as it existed in the past. - The famous" OutSystems culture" is barely hanging. Despite the honorable attempts from the HR group there's a lot of backstabbing and politics emerging.

Pros

A fantastic product used by many customers with transformational results. Market is also still growing, with ample opportunity to keep growing the business. Intelligent people with pockets of true collaboration and good work.

Cons

The last year at the company spells trouble ahead. Although the business results were OK, culture quickly transforming into a toxic rubbish pit. Arrogance, incompetence, nepotism... The CEO is conspicuously absent from the frontlines, only concerned with the internal workings. He seems to harbour the belief that everyone around him is stupid and often vocalizes this in public. His desired to surround himself with sycophants is well known. The rate of executive turnover is very high, and the management team in general feels jaded and disconnected. The most recent interesting development is the assembly of a merry men "Business Operations" function - ex-McKinsey personnel. They gallivant around different departments, attempting to proffer advice in the manner of the typical consultant... little substance, abundant hubris, and comical in their attempts to instruct others on how to perform their duties. They are viewed as the running joke within the company and seem to be blissfully oblivious to this fact. Following the "Business Operations Optimization Process", Marketing underwent layoffs and now it appears that all others departments will be similarly affected.
