Pros

OuterKnown graciously allots its retail employees free clothing each quarter. Other than that absolutely nothing. Sustainability? Big whoop!

Cons

The best thing we do, talk about an aging surfer who doesn’t care about this brand because he has twenty separate companies that are managed by cheap labor and greedy ELT members. The ELT discount was 70%, and a retail sales associate was 50%, so the people who got paid the least were expected to wear overpriced clothing that barely holds up over a year. Meanwhile the HQ/ELT team, who get paid the most, get the steeper discount. Our stores receive ZERO help when it comes to marketing any events, promos, etc. The communication is horrendous, for example: store managers were told on the last week of July that we needed to cut everyone’s hours back from 40-32 or less. Another huge con is the surfers biggest fans can’t afford to buy any OuterKnown, it’s outrageously expensive and for what? ‘Sustainability’ I’m not sure if pricing your items up by 400% combats emissions, but apparently it does. The most frustrating part about working here was when you needed a reimbursement for expenses. Most of my team never was reimbursed for their first expenses because the amount of prodding and questioning from the accounting team was overkill. Stores never could receive a company card to buy simple things with to motivate teams, get items for events, or store wide flower promos. We were forced to use our personal funds, which we then wouldn’t see back for weeks. Also, they’re not paying you a lot to work here, so it never seemed worth doing. I did express my concerns about reimbursements to the CFO and was quickly told that I, and others would abuse the store payment card power, and was accused of making it seem like the reimbursement process was awful, just to get the card.

Pros

Decent pay, before they cut your hours in half.

Cons

Myself and all of my hourly coworkers that were hired as full time employees were recently demoted to part time with 1 days notice, forcing a lot of us to quit. The company is hemorrhaging money on overpriced laptops, software that doesn’t work and rapid expansion the corporate team is not equipped to deal with, while its existing stores have to fight tooth and nail to have toilet paper and drinking water delivered. Their solution was to cut employee hours from 40 to around 15 a week. I’ve been on several calls regarding the toxic environment in corporate and it definitely trickles down to a store level. From brushing the companies founders transphobic remarks under the rug, to deceiving its own employees with empty promises I cannot in good conscience recommend any decent person work for this company.
