Pros

Flexible and relaxed work environment. Great coworkers. I felt like I could really make a difference in my role. The people I worked with for the software packages I supported were amazing - supportive, appreciative and understanding of the hard work I was putting into my job. I never felt like I had to take my work home with me.

Cons

Training was lacking in many areas. There was an orientation, but beyond any training was largely reading manuals and digging into the software. Not everyone learns that way, and I would have liked a little more on the philosophy behind the software I supported and the design decisions that were made. Pay was not what I would have expected for downtown Houston.

Pros

It is a good place right out of school to get some experience and then leave. There is some possibility to move up but not without stepping on others and being selfish.

Cons

They motivate via fear and pressure. They expect you to work in teams but directly compare you to your teammates and fewer than half will get raises or bonus although all have done the same work. You will be expected to do way more than you are possibly able to and then you will be berated which will give them a reason to not give you a raise, your year end bonus or to justify firing you. The company is run strictly on a margin basis regardless of the good work the company has done to build a product, or the additional features the products need. This is a private company with nearly infinite backing and rather than grow a business they concentrate on quarterly margins because that's how the execs are rewarded. The performance reviews are such that a manager must put his team on a bell curve. If you are new, you will be rated against those with 5 or 10 yrs experience. Dont be surprised if you fall on the left side of that curve. That will be enough to not get your raise or bonus with everyone else - regardless of the good work you do in the rest of the year. Only get a job here if you really really need it. And then, use it to fund your job search for something better. Beware: 3 Product Managers left in January. One in 2010. Pay: They want you to have 10 years experience but will want to pay as if you have none while you work two positions for them.

P2 could have great potential

Pros

Great people, and great ideas. I didn't meet anyone at P2 whom I did not get along with, and my immediate supervisor was amazing. I got the feeling that the people doing the actual work really wanted to do a good job. Benefits were rather decent. A great 401(k) plan and a decent health plan.

Cons

Above all, I left P2 because they couldn't pay my market salary. I even had my boss pushing for a higher salary, but it never materialized. The largest frustration with P2 was that each department and product team worked in silos. Getting help from other departments was nigh impossible, and only happened when upper management got involved. Unfortunately, getting upper management involved in anything was very difficult. Additionally, most of the upper management either refused to listen to concerns brought up by the lower rungs of the ladder, or they listened and blatantly blew off your concerns. There was lots of talks about how to improve things, but nothing ever actually improved.
