Pros

Variety of different health care options which appeal to different income levels

Cons

Toxic work environment, zero work life balance, a terrible senior and executive management team, low pay and no compensating factors which would make someone stay. All of the job opportunities listed on their website are not due to growth as they will tell you. They are due to FLIGHT! People come and they LEAVE quickly. WARNING!!! If you are gainfully employed elsewhere DO NOT consider making a move to PenFed!!! I have over 25 years of professional experience and I have worked at a variety of different organizations and none have come close to how bad my experience has been at PenFed. Please note that I am a very positive half glass full kind of person so I am not writing a negative review because I am angry, resentful or bitter. My only reason for providing this review is to prevent anyone else from making the very terrible mistake I made by joining PenFed. PenFed's only objective is their Drive to 75 and they are willing to drive right over anyone they need to in order to achieve this goal. Whose bodies are left laying in the parking lot? Their employees!!! There is no appreciation for a job well done and it does not matter how hard you work, it will be very difficult to advance as there are always back room dealings going on between the senior and executive management in an effort to get their cronies in the door. They are not interested in new ideas and when you present possible solutions to complex issues facing the credit union, they will scoff at you and continue to do it the wrong way. Every day you come to work you will question yourself and wonder if you have lost your edge or if just don't know everything you though you knew. The Executive Management Team is a joke (with the exception of 1 or 2). They backbite, step on each others toes and throw each other under the bus. There are 1 or 2 who truly do have PenFed's best interest at heart, but the rest of them appear to take a huge dose of EGO every morning. They are consumed with their own personal agendas and are hungry for the perceived power and clout that goes along with working for such a "Prestigious" credit union. The negative energy at the top has trickled all the way down and has created one of the most toxic work environments I have ever experienced. All of the most senior employees whose sweat and tears built the credit union up to what it has become today have been left in the dust and are being "encouraged" to retire. Sexual and racial comments are rampant but no one bothers to report anymore because HR reports it to the Executive Team and it is then covered up. Although I myself am not a minority, I can clearly see that Blacks are not valued at this company. Three of their VPs (all black) have retired since January or moved on to other opportunities. When you walk through the halls you can hear the comments from other Blacks wondering why they are not represented at the manager level and above. Don't get me wrong, they have their quota of 2 or 3 but that is about it. There is zero respect for employees at all levels of the organization. Executive Management thinks nothing of openly criticizing and reprimanding their direct reports in front of other employees. Individuals are bullied and threatened and when there is a position in another department, they will "freeze" jobs in order to prevent your growth. If you are allowed to move on, you are told you will not be welcome back in your current department ever again; a tactic used to instill fear and paralyze growth. There is so much more I can say, but suffice is to say STAY AWAY. DO NOT BE MOVED BY THE FANCY NEW CAREER SITE AND THE EMPLOYEE TESTIMONIALS. For the record, it took HR countless weeks to find 5 or 6 people willing to say anything positive about the company.

Pros

Nice workspace in Tyson's, Excellent charity work. Great place to be a consultant as they have zero vendor management and pay on time. Great place to recruit the competent people if you know where to look (Hint, don't bother with the SVP or higher level, unless you're looking to short a company and want to guarantee your investment).

Cons

Inexcusable destruction of people's lives, both employees and members. Incompetent management, Worst in class execution of business practices. The company performs at a 20-25% level of potential. Oh and did I mention, flat out racism. There are no minorities above VP except for the token EVP of global fixed assets. Any minority will be managed out strategically because it's a white world. The women at the top are wretched and will ensure to hurt you and destroy your career if you reveal their incompetence. Branches are losing 25 employees a month and the growth is done solely by acquisition. Therefore anywhere you come in, you're inheriting problems and will be made a scapegoat if you're competent and disagree, so you're better off not joining. High turnover and wage disparity by race and gender. Great place to sue, as they are too bull headed to change and too incompetent to cover up.

Pros

Dedicated staff. Privilege to SERVE those who protect this Nation. Competitive Pay & Benefits.

Cons

Growing "entitlement" attitude of some employees. Many employees just want something-for-nothing. If this organization isn't for you and the work is too hard - quit your whining and LEAVE!
