Pros

My coworkers are a high point of working at the club. Also, the facility is fantastic. I love working out in such a diverse facility (I can go to the gym, swim, play basketball, use the steam room, etc.). I also like having a diverse roll lifeguarding and teaching. It helps mix things up.

Cons

Pay: Lifeguards make less than at many other pools. Recent instructor pay changes mean more work without matching pay. Workload: Lifeguarding and instructing shifts are chaotic. Everyone is overworked and the people who don't carry their own weight are not penalized while everyone else picks up the slack. Disorganization: Many basic policies/standards are unevenly enforced or missing all together. This has led to frustrated staff and way more saves/CPR than I've ever seen at any other pool. Members get mixed messages then get mad at staff. Management still hasn't figured out how to fix this and often doesn't even acknowledge the problem at all. Incompetent Management Team: This has gotten worse over the past few years. The management team puts out fires instead of preventing them. They are inconsistent when dealing with members and staff and don't seem to understand the needs of the department. Their policy building is based on politics, not industry standards or the actual needs of the department. They make excuses or downplay issues instead of addressing them. Overall, overworked employees tolerate a dysfunctional department until they burn out and quit.

Thank you for thoughtful comments and constructive feedback about working at the PRO Sports Club. We realize some time has passed since you wrote this review and would like to apologize for not responding sooner. However, since your review we have been working hard to implement new management procedures as well as have had some new additions to our management team. Pros

good managers (for the most part). possibility to earn higher wage by completing knowledge tests. free gym membership.

Cons

was there for 9 months and still was not able to get a schedule that I wanted. passed most of the tests and still had hostess positions which basically entailed folding robes, stocking lockers, cleaning the lounge, etc (any undesirable job). there was no consistency in scheduling. some days id have to be there at 6am until 230pm and others id get there at 2 and stay at least till 10pm. on busy days hostessing, you are on your feet all day. although it may be less busy in other areas of the spa, not too many people are willing to help with the locker room or lounge unless told to by the managers. one of the most frustrating things was me running around like crazy getting teas, new robes, fresh water, etc, etc and walking out to the front desk to see the managers and fellow employees gabbing around the front desk or hiding in reservations.

Pros

• facilities (though very dated decor) • equipment • benefits (for full time personnel) • perks/discounts on purchases and services • number of services available to members and staff • exceptional family/kids offerings (i.e. childcare, camps, family days) • you feel like you are a part of a family as an employee • great coworkers In general, the people who make up the middle management (director level and down) are genuinely nice people. The issue is that the vast majority of them have been home grown in Pro Club and most have no (or at best little) experience in leadership outside of this company. Their leadership styles are heavily influenced by the President and CEO and hence you have a lot of people who think in a box and exactly the same. There is a lot I have loved about PRO. It is very much a family and the people there are wonderful - both members and staff, but I am very worried about our future and our leadership. We need new leaders who are experienced, knowledgeable, strategic, and bring new ideas.

Cons

• poor leadership/management • alarming decision making • favoritism • not open to ideas or new ways of doing things • Focus on plastic surgery and appearance • NO diversity • outdated views on great customer service • atrocious technology and website • Nickel and diming our members while charging them the highest membership rates around • tendency to fire great people and hold on to mediocre/poor performers for years This club was the absolute top of game, bleeding edge, best of the best at one time. It was the place revered by other clubs and we had all the best people in the industry, but it has not been that in a long time. The facility is incredible – no other facility compares in size or offerings. But we are struggling to bring in new memberships, we are losing members who have been with PRO for decades, and we no longer attract the best talent in the industry. Can this change? Absolutely, but there needs to be serious change in leadership, or at the very least a shift in many of leadership's strategies, starting at the top and working down. The executive leadership makes extremely poor decisions (Examples: Spending millions on a medical facility we cannot use yet having minimal investment and effort put into improving technology – note: a significant percentage of our member base works in the tech sector; Executive leadership hiring someone who is woefully woefully unqualified into the position of COO; Absolutely resisting any adaptation to the way we operate when a pandemic hits; etc.) Then, when our membership numbers take a hit, the response is to try to find any way they can to charge our current members more to make up for their errors. These types of decisions are killing the club and our members. Note: our membership numbers were diving before the pandemic hit. Closed minded and small thinking. It is the biggest challenge with the leadership in the company. The management believes their way of doing things is the only way and that it is far superior to any other club around - and to be fair, it did work for a long time but times have changed. Members have changed. Leadership needs to be open to new ideas and strategies. They desperately need to hire people who are qualified, knowledgeable, and who bring new ideas and strategies to the table. *Big leaders hire people who think differently than they do. *Big leaders want people who challenge their thought processes and ideas. *Big leaders hire BIGGER leaders. *Big leaders realize they are not always right. *Big leaders are genuinely open to new ideas.
