Pros

Flexible leave time and very fun coworkers. I love Bird, the mission is really sound and there’s room for a lot of good to come from the work Patientco does. Some of the people at Patientco are true gems I’ll keep as treasured lifelong friends.

Cons

Patientco has a few BIG issues that the leadership is reluctant to address, namely blatant racism and homophobia in the workplace. I know of instances where former executives used the F word slur to shame a sales rep for drinking a cocktail and another executive that refused to promote someone because of their sexual orientation (using coded language like “not strong enough” and “too feminine”). Also, the company has a history of racial bias. Leaders use coded language like “sassy,” “confrontational,” and “loud” to reprimand black coworkers for the exact same actions a white coworker is taking (and the white coworker receives no reprimand). Also, the hiring manager has openly expressed personal beliefs among coworkers about the laziness of certain racial groups. This is something that is honestly well known around Patientco but a lot of people turn a blind eye because they’re unsure what to do. There are also cases of gender based discrimination in salary. An employee was fired for disclosing salaries of other employees, but through that it became apparent that one male employee with little experience and no advanced degree was making ~$100,000 while a female employee of similar rank with an advanced degree was only making 70% of that (trying to avoid actual numbers because the company is small enough to know who these people are). They pressure people to not discuss salaries to avoid realization of this disparity. Whenever these discriminatory acts are brought up, management just hand waves over it, talks about diversity training, and moves on. There’s no movement to introduce diversity into the all white leadership board, employees are talked to about “respect” when the real conversation should be the glaring, pervasive discrimination. Also, in much less big of a deal, there is virtually no job growth. They’ll promise you a job opportunity that will never come to fruition. I loved the people I was with but my time there set my career path back instead of moving it forward. I would literally never recommend someone I like to work at Patientco because I don’t want to set them up for stress, failure, and likely discrimination.

Thank you very much for your candid feedback. Two of our Core Values as an organization are to “Improve Each and Every Day” and “Embrace Responsibility.” As a growing company, we recognize that there is always room for improvement and we embrace the responsibility that we have to our employees, our clients, and the communities we serve. As consistently highlighted through the favorable response and support of our CEO, Bird has committed to and proven to be resolute in casting our vision to not only welcome candid feedback, but build a collaborative and inclusive team. This vision supports and cultivates our growing culture and how we serve our clients to make the future better for Healthcare and Patientcoians. Again, thank you for your candid feedback. Pros

- leadership team cares about maintaining strong culture and values - active employee engagement in things like culture committee - leadership team that cares about listening to employee feedback - focus on improving diversity & inclusion through hiring and employee experience as well as in its product to reduce health inequities - flexibility to WFH during COVID-19 - honest and fair HR policies regarding compensation, performance reviews, peer feedback

Cons

- not enough people with strong healthcare understanding, from who buys and why to what do healthcare workflows look like on the ground to healthcare integration standards, which makes executing on vision a lot more difficult - struggles to innovate based on new, valuable problems to solve vs. using cool tech - very young employee base, often first job out of school so no external references as to best practices for their department, how different roles should work together, etc. - a lot of first time managers trying to figure out how to scale the company - under resourced a lot of the time

Thank you for the comments and feedback. Healthcare is an interesting space and understanding the workflows and integrations of our clients is key to creating a better patient experience. We need to continue to find ways to share this industry knowledge as we grow. In addition, we need to pay attention to the balance of goals with burn out if a team is under-resourced. In 2021, as we continue to responsibly scale, we will keep investing in the areas of the organization where we needed to support our clients and drive Happy Patient experience. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Dear former Patientcoian: Thank you for the candor. It was not easy to read, but we appreciate your feedback. We take and act on feedback all the time to improve our culture. It is the only way we Improve Each and Every Day (one of our Core Values). We openly strive to hire highly talented individuals with a diverse set of background and skill sets to drive our success. Contrary to the comments, we place extra emphasis on hiring those with specific Healthcare knowledge in our Sales and Customer departments. We also have high performance expectations for those teams to be experts in both Revenue Cycle and Finance to effectively partner with our prospects and clients and add value. Accountability is key here in order for us to be successful. We clearly missed the mark with your experience at Patientco. Thank you for taking the time to give us this perspective.
