Pros

Beautiful state of the art facility at Riverbend Hospital. Hardworking, dedicated care giving staff. This is a closed house and has unions in place, thank god!

Cons

We are chronically and dangerously understaffed most of the time due to draconian cuts to the frontline workers who do direct patient care. They no longer seem to be focused on the original mission from when it was run by Catholic nuns. Now it’s all about the bottom line. On Riverbend’s recent 10 year anniversary, Peace Health sent out pink slips to caregivers in ICU, Medical ICU, Ward Clerks, Orderlies and Float Pool, due to many positions be eliminated. They will be given the option of voluntary severance or bidding for open positions in other departments. This is all part of their most recent “re-organization” which originally started with trying to push Nurses and CNA2 to 12 hour shifts. Both unions fought back and now 12 hour shifts are voluntary for current staff. I am most concerned about the elimination of the float pool. That means caregivers will frequently float to all departments, including ones they might not be competent in. It also means the floors may be left short staffed. Over the last year, the shift I’ve worked on has been forced to care for 12+ patients due to shortages in staff. It is very difficult to give good care under those circumstances. It has become a hostile work environment. Very unfortunate.

Pros

Knowledgeable staff, coworkers with great bed-side manors, people who care (for the most part) about the patients and the difference we can make as a whole. Great collaboration opportunities with other departments resulting in a knowledge and skillset of working with all kinds of people, disciplines and networks. Great for networking, great for the resume.

Cons

Management has little control over the staff, gossiping is worse than at a high school, there is a major lack of consistency as well as just a lacking in general of disciplinary actions and major favoritism. Managers who are either related to some of their current employees, are best friends or roommates with their employees. High turnover rate. Hostile work environment.
