I’ve been with Peninsula Behavioral Health (PBH) since February 2011, starting out as a receptionist—which, at PBH, was far from a typical front-desk role. As a Community Mental Health organization, PBH operates in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where even the entry-level roles come with responsibility, opportunity, and impact. Over the years, I’ve worked my way through various departments and roles: from administrative support in Patient Support Services and the Psych Medical Department to becoming a Crisis Peer and later the first Peer Bridger for the Crisis Department. Today, I serve as the Development Associate in the Development Department. This journey is a testament to PBH's commitment to internal growth and recognizing individual strengths. What stands out to me most is PBH’s ability to see potential in its employees. The leadership takes the time to understand where a person can thrive. I’ve applied for positions I didn’t get, and looking back, I now understand that those roles may not have brought out my best qualities. In the long run, I’ve always ended up where I was meant to be—doing work that both challenges and fulfills me. The agency also cares deeply about employee morale. Bonuses are shared when possible, and staff appreciation is more than just lip service—it’s real and felt. Halloween and the holiday season are especially meaningful times in the office, filled with spirit, celebration, and community. My co-workers have become like a second family to me. The work itself is deeply rewarding. Like many roles in mental health, it can be emotionally intense at times, but the sense of purpose far outweighs the challenges. Even though I now work in a non-client-facing department, I still miss the direct connection with clients, which speaks to how impactful that work truly was. PBH genuinely advocates for the people and communities it serves. It’s more than just a mental health provider—it’s a pillar of hope, support, and positive change for Clallam County and beyond. I’m proud to be part of an agency that lives its mission every day. Cons
Cons: As with any role in mental health, maintaining a healthy work/life balance is essential. The work is rewarding but can be emotionally taxing and stressful. Self-care must be a top priority. PBH is a non-profit, so pay could be more competitive, though HR genuinely advocates for staff whenever possible. Turnover can be difficult and is felt among employees. It’s often not due to PBH itself, but rather the nature of the work not being the right fit for everyone. Supervisory quality can vary. I’ve had excellent leaders who naturally brought out the best in their teams, but also experienced supervisors who, while good people, may not have had the right skillset for leadership roles.
