Pros

There is certainly opportunity for growth at the University, but usually you have to completely change departments to do so. Often times there is little opportunity for growth within a Unit. Great benefits (medical, dental, vision) and time off. You can't beat the almost two weeks off around Christmas!

Cons

There is a lot of waste at the University - especially with personnel. If you don't mind watching people that don't do their work be placed in a corner or promoted to get them out of the way - while still collecting a paycheck probably bigger than yours - then you'll be fine here. Penn State could conservatively fire 1/3 of the workforce (the unproductive 1/3) and not lose anything.

Pros

Great community and resources. There is a great amount of energy during the school year due to the undergraduate students. It's great to see so many talented people in one small town.

Cons

I would not recommend to anyone that loves urban living. Main campus is remote and can get boring after the initial honeymoon phase. Communication between departments is nearly impossible and there is little efforts made to encourage collaboration in that way.

Pros

Resources. Well-equipped centers and labs. Collaborations. Knowledgable and helpful staff. Good students. The University is always renovating something.

Cons

You are often forced to work extra hard, overtime (as a grad student and a postdoc). School is very competitive even within the school.
