      Pros

      It's a big, stable company with some good technology.

      Cons

      The good technology is swamped by a highly politicised management structure -- senior managers don't manage their businesses, but spend all their time managing upwards to keep their jobs. Services -- IT, HR, Finance, Facilities, etc., are siloed and not under control of the people trying to deliver product, but can do what they like as long as central management is happy.

      This company pays the local going hourly rate.

      Cons

      As a OneSource technical writer at Gilead, Foster City, CA, on a short-term contract I was overloaded with administrative requirements like massive irrelevant required training to be fulfilled before even reporting to work. Too many managers, one from PE (part time onsite), 3 from Gilead, & no direction at all from the Gilead client created a disfunctional job.

      A culture in transition results in mixed messages

      Pros

      Well run from share holders perspective. Good people, great products noble mission and focus. Physical facilities and environment are excellent. Flexible hours and ability to work from home.

      Cons

      Lack of transparency and either unwilling or unable to communicate clear role boundaries. Middle management not able to engage in constructive conflict resolution resulting in a lack of collaboration. Shareholder value dogma (share price today) driving short term decisions.
