Pros

Working in an environment that is constantly surrounded by animals, its a wonderful feeling when a dog runs in and runs right up to you. We had some rude customers here and there but the majority of the customers were fantastic. We really were able to connect with our customers on an emotional level because it was obvious they came in because they loved their pets, and we as employees loved animals. I advanced to management within 2 years of working there. Very flexible scheduling.

Cons

In the last year I was there they did modify a lot of their unrealistic expectations by lengthening the time that it should take to complete tasks, but I think the corporation had no idea what it really takes for employees to complete these tasks. And do not realistically allow enough payroll to schedule what it really takes. Felt underpaid when I was working as a manager and temporarily covering another management position. Overworked and underpaid.

Pros

Great company that truly puts the customer first and is totally committed to quality pet care and pet products. I love dealing with the customers and their pets.

Cons

The job entails a lot of strenuous physical tasks - unloading palettes, heavy bags of food, etc. - especially because the pay is so low. We are also soooo busy that I seldom get my breaks - but that's partly my fault as well. Other than the physical labour and low pay, it's a great place to work.

Pros

If you're working as a PetStylist, you can make a LOT of money--as long as you're in a busy store. Stylists work on commission, so the more dogs you get each day, the more money you can make. The salon is also generally its own isolated little bubble, so you don't really get involved with the rest of the store. As far as benefits go, medical was probably about average for retail, but I really liked my vision and dental plans.

Cons

It really came down to management in my store. The store manager spent most of her time out front smoking, and several of the other managers were catty and back-stabbing. That alone is enough to make the work environment undesirable. The biggest overall problem is that the company is concerned with Quantity over Quality. They expect you to be able to groom at least 6 dogs right off the bat, and if you're a "Power Groomer" then you can do 8 a day (yet still have time to take your lunch breaks, because they'll really hound you if you miss those). As far as pay goes, unless you're a groomer, prepare to be paid about minimum wage.
