Pros

For those that truly care about the health, care and well being of all animals, the job can be very rewarding. Being able to educate customers on proper care, needs and requirements before they decide on a new pet, benefits both the customer and the animals. Regular customers become more like friends and you look forward to seeing them and makes you feel good when they ask for you personally because they trust you.

Cons

There is no actual training for any position. Policy states that no associate is permitted to handle any animal in pet care and/or perform any task involving the animals unless they are pet care certified, but management totally disregards this policy daily, allowing anyone/everyone to handle/sell any/all animals and fish. They even allow non certified associates to receive new arrivals of animals and treat/medicate those in the isolation room. Not only is this violating company policy, it results in a high number of returns, injuries to both customers and animals, and especially in the aquatics department, customers return with dead fish sold to them by non certified associates. If you hire in as non management, you have very little to no chance of advancement. All managers are outside hires, most of the pet care managers have absolutely no experience or knowledge of any of the animals and/or their care and store manager expects associates to train the managers. Alerting the store manager to problems, concerns or policy violations is futile, not only will no corrective action be taken, you end up with a target on your back. Obvious bias towards those that don’t make waves and blindly/quietly do what they are told regardless of right/wrong and when wrong, willing to accept all the blame.

Pros

If your an animal lover, getting to work with animals and help customers decide what new addition to their family they would like to make is so fun! I felt like there were very few unhappy customers - most were happy to be in a pet store and excited to pick out new pets. They really do their best to take good care of the pets while they're in the store.

Cons

Cleaning cages is never fun, but it's all part of caring for animals. The worst is dealing with sick animals that may have pasted on - it definitely bugged me to be around it and it was a pretty common occurrence when in the sick room.

Pros

People who love and care for animals are certainly nice to work with as are the customers coming in looking for help and advice concerning their animals. actively promotes dog and cat adoptions. the dog training at this company teaches newer positive ways to learn obedience; better than yanking the dogs neck with a chain. I also think this company really likes to hire give opportunities/advancement the younger "first job" set.

Cons

Constantly changing days and hours of work gives little room to plan life outside of work. Managers have a ton of micro management to do which leaves little time for nuts and bolts of staff business, concerns, betterment of store. Be prepared for days to go by if you have a question to get an answer and feel lucky when you do get an answer. New ideas seem to be shot down quickly or you get a nod. Any comment to a manager gets discussed with all the managers. If you are interested in being a good company soldier, have not had a job before, love animals, and helping people this is a place for you. Pay and raises are low ; reviews based on if you are liked by managers, staff, service you give customers, which if fine, but not based on your specific job duties. So, if you EVER have a disagreement (or even perceived) with staff, especially managers, or any questionable comment from a customer, no matter how 110% you have done in the last year or how many customers have said nice things about you, you still have a strike. And there is no defending yourself ,reasons, or explanation allowed AT ALL
