Red flags and confusion

Pros

Some perks at Phenom are decent although lacking compared to other later stage tech companies. Beautiful, modern office and free food were available during my time but were being reduced. Interesting product that feels cool to work for - Silicon Valley work in the Philly area.

Cons

During my time, I had zero clarity from leadership, often stuck between what the founders wanted and what other leadership advised. It made for a very confusing 9 months, with projects often started and halted with little notice. I get it, startups can be nutty, but this was excessive. I was also promised several things that did not come true - a referral bonus, hybrid schedule with a role change, and a 10% bonus that would likely have never come to fruition. No 401k match, limited equity offers, lacking basic processes, and leadership seemed checked out.

Pros

Overall, there are amazing people to work with here. In my time here there are only a few people who I didn't enjoy working with. The new hire culture driven by HR is the best I have ever seen. Peers are truly open to helping you be successful. People are happy to get on a call to discuss challenges, coach, or even train.

Cons

Leadership is driving success the wrong way. They want account managers to sell like an account executive where relationships are second to upsell. (though they are finding it is hard to upsell to existing clients with no relationship as few are hitting their quota.) You are "jokingly" told you are fired repeatedly on calls, Comp plans change and only in the favor of the organization or the top 1%. Last year only 2 account managers hit their quota but comp plan was adjusted as if it was more possible. New hire training is weak. You are left to learn nearly all by yourself via playing around or videos. In addition, There is a lot of turnover in client facing roles. Clients are frustrated they have had 3 - 5 account managers / customer success managers in a year and therefore a limited in engagement. Timelines from implementation are not reliable. An add-on product can take 12 weeks to add when they quoted 4 - 6. Get off of Gmail for email and calendar. Be open to people using a PC instead of Mac if they are more comfortable. There is no true reason to be an Apple shop 100%. They are helping 1 billion people find work by training employees before they leave to go somewhere else.

Smoke and Mirrors

Pros

A start-up culture can be fun. There are some really cool, smart hardworking people still there. Things are always challenging and you certainly will never be bored.

Cons

-What clients are shown, what they buy and what they get are total opposites. They sell a diamond and give the teams that develop and deliver the product the tools and processes to deliver a lump of coal. Sales is God and they take the money and run while the rest of the company works ridiculously long hours and gets beat up by clients trying to clean up the coal dust and make it at least shine like a diamond. -Long hours and pretty much 24/7 availability expected without the compensation to justify it. Go somewhere else and work a 40 hour work week during normal business hours for the same $ or more. -Management is out for themselves and their investment in the company - they will say and do anything if it benefits them. You can't trust any of them and its disappointing what greed does to some people.
