Pros

Lots of great and inspiring stories to draw from. The overall purpose of the institution is a wonderful thing.

Cons

Too many meetings to accomplish anything. Projects sometimes aren't able to be completed within a year due to the endless amount of input each sector of the institution. Things move slow and change is looked upon with fear and suspicion.

Pros

Because it's an educational institution employees have access to tuition waivers and such. There is a general encouragement and facilitation by management for staff learning and development. Backgrounds of coworkers are varied and often educated and interesting.

Cons

There is a glass ceiling between the "Classified" side and the "AP/Faculty" side. A lot of the issues with any huge employer are there; A lot of internal bickering and strife, union disputes, funding issues, a feeling of getting lost in the machine.

Pros

management is supportive, great benefits and pay, good place to work if you want to teach or help people, they encourage professional development; strong union- job security (it is almost impossible to get fired if you have been around for a while)

Cons

It is hard to move up within the college if you do not have previous management experience, there are more opportunities for lateral moves; it is so big, sometimes it can get a bit bureaucratic - for example, it takes for ever to hire someone because of the lengthy HR process; because people do not get fired, some "long timers" are not as motivated as new hires are; it may be hard to get in - many staff work as part-time and temporary before getting full -time position
