Pros

Good benefits. A chance to help out psychiatrically disabled adults who are trying to become or remain independent. Work within a multi-disciplinary team setting can be supportive and gratifying.

Cons

The management and administration of this agency are not all trained mental health professionals. This often results in substandard care and compromised safety of clients and staff.

Worthwhile organization, if you believe in the work

Pros

Full Time Counselors work closely as a team, which provides great opportunities to learn and grow in the profession. Benefits are great, with plenty of time off to help offset the demanding schedule and, at times, draining work. Meaningful, important work, to support clients in getting their lives back.

Cons

Mandatory overnight shifts for counselors are difficult. Policies are one-size-fits-all across the many different programs, and as such don't always reflect the realities faced by counselors. There is a bit of a bottleneck organizationally, which causes a disconnect between line staff and central office. To the organizations credit this is because counselor jobs have always been protected, with admin jobs the first to be cut, however this has had some negative consequences.

Pros

-Great benefits -You'll learn a lot by getting exposed to various populations -A good way to get great experience in the mental health field

Cons

-Terrible hours, as a full time counselor, you will need to do at least one overnight a week -The pay is pretty low for the amount of work you need to do -Management needs a lot of work -You will hear "there are a lot of grey areas" AKA no one knows what exactly to do.
