Pros

The clients you work with are amazing, it's very meaningful work when you actually feel like you can help them

Cons

-Not enough training given to or required for any of the counselors or relief counselors, which means that we're not able to help the clients as much as we would like. -The people at the top get paid an insane amount higher than everyone else, financial distribution does not make sense and you rarely see money getting put into the things that really need it like a living wage for employees for one??, improvements for the houses, activities for clients, better training for employees, etc. -constantly understaffed because the environment is so unsupportive that it can't keep good people for very long -you can see that you're not actually providing the support that these clients need. Yes it's helping, and depending on the house and staff the clients interact with, they are getting support. But it's really sad how this organization truly fails those they're supposed to serve. They deserve better, both employees and clients -no emotional support for employees in place to help them after dealing with serious client mental health crises -may I repeat it is NOT a living wage. There is no way to support yourself and enjoy life in SF with these wages without having a second job at least.

Good Experience

Pros

Good rigorous experience in mental health care. Very caring staff members. Rarely ever a boring day. Excellent amount of paid time off and decent benefits. Meet a lot of fun different kinds of people. Good prep for a Masters of Social Work.

Cons

Low pay for the area. Little mobility. Stressful situations at times which are hard to not take home with you. Having to do overnights as a full time counselor could be exhausting (Relief Counselor does not have to do these).
