Pros

Solid benefits and PTO. Many people working there are nice and well-meaning, and some are mission driven. Helping students and teachers (directly or indirectly) is a great outcome of your day-to-day work.

Cons

Project scoping and deadlines are consistently laughable. Too many managers/directors/VPs/C-level people, and many don't understand or simply couldn't do the job of their subordinates. A lot of people stepping on others to get ahead and throwing each other under the bus, meanwhile the mission of the organization gets lost. Now that I hear they are outsourcing their IT work to India, I'm not sure what the mission is. It was to promote STEM education to students in the US but off-shoring the work is wholly ironic. How would they explain to their engineering and computing students that they off-shore their own jobs? Turnover was pretty high, many great people left, and morale was pretty low. What could have a been a great opportunity for a model workplace and a great mission had devolved into a negative atmosphere fueled by shady office politics and poor management. In the end I'm really disappointed.

Pros

Insurance, retirement and PTO are hard to beat.

Cons

1/1/2017 - 20 full-time staff (6 App Devs, 1 UI/UX) 6/30/2017 - 12 full-time staff (1 App Dev) In that time 1 staff member was added, and 9 departed. That is just one department. I usually don't usually buy into those "Best Places to Work" surveys, but when I started at PLTW we were #1, the next year we were #7 and then we fell off the list entirely. PLTW was a great place to work, but they fell off the list for a reason. I echo the sentiments of the others recently departed. From what I have been told, two new App Devs are supposed to start this week. I apologize to them for not getting this out there sooner. Seriously, please don't work here. This isn't just about IT. Almost no one there cares about the mission anymore. PLTW just just a stepping stone to the ascending, a feel-good pit-stop on their resume.

There's no IT in PLTW

Pros

Believing that working for PLTW is making a difference in America’s future in STEM. The developers had a great working environment and a great culture. The developers had support from their CTO and were successful. Great quarterly team meetings. The Kool-Aid tasted great.

Cons

PLTW changed the flavor. I don't drink the Kool-Aid anymore. Management will sell the story that there is opportunity for advancement, yet I never witnessed anyone “advancing” during my time at PLTW. I did see people leaving because of vicious office politics and then others filling a vacant spot. This should not be considered “advancement”. The mindset of management at PLTW is that developers are nothing more than replaceable assets. This is why they have to completely rebuild their team every 3 years. Some months ago management decided that overseas contractors will be used for future projects instead of their internal IT team. Currently, PLTW is rebuilding their IT team from scratch - again - for the 3rd time.
