Pros

Benefits, time off, mostly remote work.

Cons

I posted a review here several weeks ago that was accepted, however, I initially recieved an email that the company had attempted to remove the review but Glassdoor determined they wouldn't remove it. However, it seems PLTW was persistent, so Glassdoor asked me to rewrite the review. Due to this fact, I think the first thing to know is that PLTW works hard to censor any honest feedback from their employees. To summarize my previous review, I would encourage anyone looking to join PLTW, and current employees, to review the organization's form 990 for the last few years. Here you can see how the c-suite's compensation changes (increases) compared to the rest of the employees struggling to keep up with inflation. I will mostly echo other reviews here. The people are unkind, leadership is out of touch, and in general something feels off. PLTW tries so hard to mask the internal inequity it's embarrassing. Stop trying to fix the problems with company swag and "extras." Fix the problems by addressing the broken performance review process, stop underpaying everyone but leadership, and definitely stop stifling feedback by persuading Glassdoor to remove negative reviews.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns. We aim to ensure that all feedback is constructive and adheres to the guidelines set by Glassdoor. Sometimes, reviews may be removed by Glassdoor if they don’t meet these guidelines. We are incredibly gratified that recently over 88% of our organization shared that they are happy with their work experience would recommend PLTW as a great place to work. We are disappointed that your experience is not similar. If you’d like to discuss your feedback further, please contact Talent Experience. PLTW values honest and balanced insight, and we’d like the opportunity to address any concerns you may have directly. Thank you!

Pros

Solid benefits and PTO. Many people working there are nice and well-meaning, and some are mission driven. Helping students and teachers (directly or indirectly) is a great outcome of your day-to-day work.

Cons

Project scoping and deadlines are consistently laughable. Too many managers/directors/VPs/C-level people, and many don't understand or simply couldn't do the job of their subordinates. A lot of people stepping on others to get ahead and throwing each other under the bus, meanwhile the mission of the organization gets lost. Now that I hear they are outsourcing their IT work to India, I'm not sure what the mission is. It was to promote STEM education to students in the US but off-shoring the work is wholly ironic. How would they explain to their engineering and computing students that they off-shore their own jobs? Turnover was pretty high, many great people left, and morale was pretty low. What could have a been a great opportunity for a model workplace and a great mission had devolved into a negative atmosphere fueled by shady office politics and poor management. In the end I'm really disappointed.

Pros

The benefits package is very good. You will have a hard time finding a company that provides insurance plans that are this affordable and as good as they are. There is also a fairly competitive retirement package with good company matching.

Cons

Developers are treated simply as instruments to get a job done. When opinions are offered they are listened to and promptly ignored. When strong concerns were voiced about unrealistic project timelines we were ignored. This came after I was hired and told that if a project deadline is unrealistic it gets moved. This does not happen. Additionally when other departments and teams have trouble meeting their deadlines related to development projects the development team consistently gets blamed for projects being behind schedule. The environment is full of people trying to climb the ladder without regard for who they step on. Additionally there is little to no opportunity for advancement. In my time there I never saw a single developer receive a promotion even though I was told that there was a built in promotion system. We were routinely told that there wasn't enough money to hire additional developers as well even though other teams were constantly growing and numerous people around the company received regular promotions and raises. The bottom line is developers at PLTW are sorely underpaid for the work they do, and they are shown little to no respect for their expertise and abilities. If you have a better or comparable option take it.
