There's no IT in PLTW

Pros

Believing that working for PLTW is making a difference in America’s future in STEM. The developers had a great working environment and a great culture. The developers had support from their CTO and were successful. Great quarterly team meetings. The Kool-Aid tasted great.

Cons

PLTW changed the flavor. I don't drink the Kool-Aid anymore. Management will sell the story that there is opportunity for advancement, yet I never witnessed anyone “advancing” during my time at PLTW. I did see people leaving because of vicious office politics and then others filling a vacant spot. This should not be considered “advancement”. The mindset of management at PLTW is that developers are nothing more than replaceable assets. This is why they have to completely rebuild their team every 3 years. Some months ago management decided that overseas contractors will be used for future projects instead of their internal IT team. Currently, PLTW is rebuilding their IT team from scratch - again - for the 3rd time.

Trust your gut.

Pros

The impact on student lives is real and best captured by the YouTube videos of alumni.

Cons

The impact is not enough to overcome all of the red flags I saw during the lengthy interview process and now deal with as an employee. The stated core values are not lived. The culture cannot be fixed by commemorative swag. It would need hard work that is not prioritized. Mean girls run the VP level. The SVPs and ELT do not work as hard as their compensation assumes nor support their customer facing staff. “Togetherness” is therefore forced and purposeless. “Learning” is not valued nor properly planned. “Inclusion” is only for those who have taught or administered PLTW in their midwestern schools and districts. “Customer Centricity” is only a motive for when it matches the plans of leadership already. You will see some of this during the interview process - trust your gut.

Pros

Ok benefits Remote for the most part SOME nice people.

Cons

- Terrible pay (except for the higher ups of course, see form 990) - Insulting performance review process, leaving everyone unsatisfied. - CEO gloats about how much money they have for acquisition in meetings to underpaid employees. - Compulsory pointless meetings. - Compulsory pointless travel. - Management openly mock the new CEO to anyone who will listen. Very messy. - Management spends a lot of time rearranging things to make it seem like they’re doing something, or holding meetings where they subject you too a self-indulgent apology for the insensitive jokes they made the previous day. - In my time at the company I saw multiple people resign effective immediately, or be let go without warning. - There is no accountability, something is always someone else’s fault. - Loyalty, honesty and new ideas are not rewarded.
