      When Leadership Fails to Lead: A Professional Services Perspective

      Pros

      The people were genuinely dedicated and wanted to do great work. Even within a corporate framework, there was a shared sense of wanting to succeed, and that is worth recognizing.

      Cons

      In Professional Services, leadership roles often seemed occupied by tenure rather than capability or desire. The lack of staffing weighed heavily on the team, and leadership failed to reflect on why people were leaving—myself included. When I left after years of commitment, no one asked how to retain me. Instead of realistic boundaries, we were told to just “get creative.” While sales was prioritized, Professional Services was treated as a cost center—ignoring that one cannot succeed without the other.

      Supportive coworkers but silos hinder collaboration

      Cons

      Proofpoint has grown by acquisition but never did the work to breakdown the silos of former startups. Tribal and territorial tiffs prevent larger scale work from happening.
