The growing staff were helpful to each other and we had a good sense of comraderie.
Cons
There was a lot of instability in upper management with constantly shifting expectations and bosses. Some members of the upper management had no prior greenhouse experience and made completely uninformed decisions. There was a lot of illegal pesticides sprayed on the crops that weren’t safe for greenhouse produce. There wasn’t WSIB claims filed for work accidents and workers who were injured didn’t get paid for missed work during injury, despite following necessary channels. Racist comments were made to workers (labourers and growing staff) from their superiors, making the work atmosphere difficult to take. I noticed threats of violence happening between co-workers, which lead to poor morale knowing this was openly allowed by the HR department. There was a revolving door of staff with constant firing and quitting in multiple departments. Growing staff were told “no one’s job is safe”. Needless to say, the workplace culture wasn’t positive.
