Pros

- You can get some good experience if you're on the right project - Most individual contributors are pleasant to work with - Nearly impossible to get fired if you're willing to toe the company line - Discretionary PTO (though you need to be on call, most projects have a bus factor of 1) - Nice coffee machines - Fun company activities - Plenty of open positions

Cons

- Major blame culture; you'll be given unrealistic deadlines and chastised for not meeting them regardless of why. If you're lucky enough to meet a deadline, management will make the next deadline tighter. I can't remember the last time anyone on the team met a deadline. - Toxic, untouchable "old guard" - Anyone other than bioinformaticists are treated as second-class citizens - Management actively discourages engineering best practices or pays lip service to them. - "Unit testing" is taking screenshots of PuTTY and pasting them into a word document. This is mandatory. - "Code Reviews" are hour long walkthroughs at the end of a project - Dev process is strangled by blind, iron-fisted enforcement of company process. You'll be lucky to write 300 lines of code in a year. - Expect to pay ~$8000 for real insurance. - Merit raises are below inflation (You'll get a pay cut every year, even for "Above Expectations" Performance

Pros

some caring nice colleagues that take a while to find

Cons

Employee engagement ratings in ~ 50% range when healthy companies are in 75% range; Sr Exec with massive ego who thinks he's the best sales person in the world that comes across as insincere and fake; Sales Execs who haven't learned (and never will) that effective leaders serve others and not themselves; Execs who haven't fixed a thing in years and have perfected the art of deflection; core team leaders who can't get things done unless it's throwing others under the bus; broken HR system and culture;

toxic culture, CEO & senior leaders lack emotional intelligence

Pros

some good customer interactions only when data set-up and lab ops doesn't mess things up (which is too often), some smart colleagues who care

Cons

toxic culture created by the CEO and his sr leadership team who lack emotional intelligence and are focused on their job preservation rather than on increasing employee engagement and customer satisfaction. Feel bad that customers have to deal with such incompetence and poor quality. No career growth, fed BS from sr leaders about budget restrictions when they line their own pockets with stock options and other incentives that aren't shared below the VP level -- CEO and Sr leaders would make an excellent Harvard Business Review case study on how NOT to treat employees- the case study would be text book for the toxic culture created by the CEO and his minions.
