Pros

Mostly light work (window screens and small parts). The work often includes moderate task rotation instead of one simple repetitive task. Base wages are livable, while overtime wages can allow for a good income. Opportunity for advancement is available, albeit not always easy. Wage increases require the mastering of multiple tasks (usually an entire department) before granted, but once granted many production workers make about $20/hr at time of writing.

Cons

Too many hours (in the summer), although not for all employees. I have seen packaging assemblers be forced to work 70 hours on busy weeks (or be written up for lack of attendance). Other departments are usually limited to 60 hours a week on busy weeks (which is all summer). There used to be a typical layoff in winter, but it did not happen this winter, so its full time in the slow season. Other problems include a bad management system (bad policies, okay managers as people). The company claims it tries to innovate, but often will not invest a few hundred dollars into equipment, even if it has a high chance of saving substantially on labor costs.

Pros

The job itself is not bad, it’s a little different than other factory experiences and generally speaking from my own experience as for the shift I work on the supervisor is reasonable and I have an awesome team leader. The work scheduling is also a big plus because you have different days off, some through the week and every other weekend. This allows you to more easily balance work and life as you aren’t owned on a Monday through Friday basis every week. They also offer a little incentive for higher pay rates depending on the amount of work you’re willing to learn and do.

Cons

A major downfall are the people on top. I’ve seen some moves that are ridiculous and so far I’ve had nothing to say until now. We’re currently getting hit with a winter storm, not just a little snow fall but ice has been a big factor. A few days ago there was an ice storm and when it started to hit they shut the plant down. Last night we started to get hit with another round yet they would not let us go so that we could safely get home. We were told that if we left that it would be an attendance occurrence (on an already unreasonable point system). Unfortunately we were forced into a decision to either stay for a few more HOURS under freezing drizzle in order to save our attendance points or try to get home without issues while we still could. A little snow fall is one thing, ICE puts an entirely different approach. We should have never been placed in that situation. Also consider that when the plant was shut down for the first round, it was for different shifts other than mine. Granted that the weather events happened to align with the scheduling of those crews, however at this point, for this round of weather, there is no other conclusion that can be drawn other than it seems as though our lives and positions are more expendable than those of other crews. Apparently the career image of someone who didn’t have to be driving on it for a pay check was more critical than our safety and that individual would have rather reprimanded us for leaving rather than to grant permission like others were given. I’m giving the 3 star rating because it’s in the middle. I would give 5 for the job itself and I would give 1 for the individual that is allowed to treat people this way.
