      Treated as free labor rather than a learning experience

      Pros

      A co-op does look decent on a résumé.

      Cons

      Instead of being mentored, interns and co-ops were treated as disposable labor. The work was repetitive and low-level, with no effort made to teach or grow technical skills. It felt like being used to fill gaps without recognition or credit, which defeated the purpose of joining a co-op in the first place.

      The engineering manager didn't care if I learned

      Pros

      Access to hands-on equipment and a technically strong environment.

      Cons

      The engineering manager tossed tasks at me without context, mentoring, or explanation. I was treated like cheap labor rather than a student there to learn. When I asked questions, I got arrogant responses or was brushed off entirely. The emotional and mental impact of being treated like an inconvenience was awful.

      There was no actual guidance, just being thrown into tasks with no direction. The engineering supervisor expected co-ops to figure things out on their own, offering little support while expecting near-full-time productivity. Instead of fostering learning, the role felt like free labor with no room for growth.
