Pros

RAND offers a lot of job flexibility with no set hours or boss. You can control the work you do and not work with people you don't work well with. But a soft money organization can be really terrible if your research area isn't well funded.

Cons

RAND works its employees way too hard. There is a terrible work-life balance and the company takes advantage of the internal competitive market.

Pros

-- Intellectually stimulating environment -- Collegial coworkers -- Flexible schedule -- Wonderful vacation benefits (you get full vacation days from the first year, and you get up to 5% extra from your salary when you take your vacation days)

Cons

-- Ridiculous overhead rate, which makes projects really expensive and at times underbudgeted; all tasks need to be done according to budget specifications and if anyone makes a mistake on a task and needs to start over or correct it, you risk being overbudget -- Internal labor market is stressful; you need to be fully covered at all times, which can be difficult if you work on the domestic side -- Long hours; there is no such things as a 40-hour workweek; more like 50-hours -- There is an expectation that you publish in order to advance, but most of the times, the project is over when you start the publication process. So that means you're working on your own time to get articles published

Pros

world class researchers world class access very important problems huge diversity of areas and approaches lovely office and location southern california

Cons

you are responsible for funding your own time so it creates a constant pressure to secure funding. Too often you are forced to choose between doing less interesting work with a large budget attached or trying to make due with less reliable but more interesting work. While everyone is friendly, professionally groups tend to be more closed off and protective of their funding. Leads to a closed off culture.
