Pros

Great experience; great teams; first job where I have felt fulfilled

Cons

Unacceptable pay: students get paid the same PhD wages in Santa Monica as a student in the Midwest Disparity: students who can't find work in defense are forced to work much harder Consulting buzzword syndrome: if you can't find work in AI or equity, your work has less visibility Other: horrible mental health access through Kaiser; administrative staff is often unsympathetic/abusive toward student concerns; administrative staff almost always mishandles fellow wages for students who seek alternative arrangements, causing such students to be denied merit pay raises;

Pros

Excellent working culture, supportive staff and administration, military friendly, nice office and amenities, cool projects and research. RAND looks good on a resume and if you're in the research field then it's definitely worth it to work here for a few years at least.

Cons

Despite having a good selection of benefits, the pay is not as high as it is with other government contractors. Their assessment of "fair market value" is not up to par with the high cost of living in states like California.
