Pros

Great location, great pay, beautiful office, excellent tools.

Cons

It's stunning how an organization as successful and notable still relies upon managment tactics of the 1960s. Employees are treated punitively, communications are top down. Collaboration is only successful within if one is fortunate to be in with the in crowd.

Pros

Importance of value added by RAND to the world. Imperative of being objective and thorough. Commitment to mission. Location - Santa Monica is BEAUTIFUL! Challenge of working with extremely capable people. Professional administrative staff was very good at their jobs.

Cons

Sometimes encountered elitist researchers. Pay rates were OK, but not great. Limited promotion opportunities for most staff - people tended to stay there for many years in the same positions.

Pros

Great place to work, fascinating and intellectually challenging work with high visibility, brilliant colleagues, tremendous flexibility to work from home, and option to use Mac instead of PC in the office.

Cons

Nearly impossible to advance without PhD, time-keeping system is frustrating, not the most socially cohesive work environment, and some less-than-ideal project leadership.
