Pros

Pro deals, 50% off REI brand items, green vest certified

Cons

Management team does not share the same values as the co-op. There have been too many “that shoulda been an HR form” but in the global climate we are in, I digress. One particular manager asks us to use our 15 min breaks to learn on Spark training, which is asking us to work on our breaks. A lot of focus and pressure on memberships and Mastercards, though there is no financial incentive/bonus. Pays slightly more (maybe a $1 or $2) than regular retail yet the expectations and knowledge you are expected to have does not balance out. You are giving many people personal experiences/fittings/advice/tours, not just folding clothes/checking people out.

Pros

Flexible hours/shifts opening and closing Great Industry discounts CoWorkers are wonderful Union

Cons

Management cuts hours without real explanation Shop standards do not exist, corp level management disavow any responsibilities of training their managers. All levels of store and corp management are anti-union, attempting various ways to fire unionized employees.

Pros

Working with like minded people who have a passion for the outdoors.

Cons

Multiple safety measures are ignored. Management does not respect work life balance and often plays favorites. Some people skate by with no accountability while other team members are expected to go above and beyond. Management will talk circles around an issue and offer no solutions, weaponizing corporate language and avoiding any accountability. Dispite the outdoor industry boom that followed Covid, the corporate team continues to make poor investments in sub par products like thier branded shoe line and the Gen.E cargo bike that they eventually end up giving them away. Each year the company procedes with more and more layoffs, eliminating long term seasoned employees to turn around and hire triple the amount of employees as seasonal help. They are moving farther away from the "expert" advice service they brand themselves as and each year we see less and less gear options in favor of high dollar clothing brands.
